Amy Schuman, a principal of The Family Business Consulting Group Inc., works with family businesses on leadership development, communication skills and team building. Her experience is centered on helping family members collaboratively create systems, structures and relationships to help them function as effective stewards of their enterprise. Amy is a faculty member of the Loyola University of Chicago Family Business Center and she previously served for 11 years as an executive of a third generation family business. She has co-authored two books with John Ward; Family Business as Paradox and Family Education for Business Owning Families. She is also the author of Nurturing the Talent to Nurture the Legacy.

Topics Covered:

Family businesses are full of paradoxes. Amy shows us that rather than having to choose between the family and the business, family-owned businesses can consciously manage and synthesize these contradictions. It is best to choose both sides of the paradox compromises, rather than one side or the other. The result will be a business that has long-term strategic and competitive advantage and a family that remains committed to continuity.
